I am so jealous...and wish so much I could be there... and will be recovering from my thyroid surgery just thinking wonderful thoughts. about your trip. I have a few suggestions to add to expand the health scope if you think you have any additional time. I would love for you to meet with the Dean of the medical School, a remarkable Scotsman there for 7 years to improve and expand the school. The Vice President of the Senate in Family and Health is a wonderful woman that has a vision far reaching. King Faisal is where we perform our cardiac surgery and our medical supplies will be arriving while you are in Kigali for our February surgical trip.
As I have traveled 23 times and I tend to stay in more basic facilities, but I am familiar with all your restaurants and hotels. The one thing I would say is the women in Rwanda take their appearance seriously and "look smart" . They recognize when other women do the same. They love the pointed toe flats and bright colors (no basic Boston Black there!) and really believe that safari wear should only be visible in the National Parks. Take advantage of the hotel laundries and you will find back on your bed in a few short hours, pressed and clean!
A wonderful scarf or two can be your best friend, for cool moments following the afternoon rain showers; as is comfortable but fashionable shoes and a bright purse. You may already do this, but I try to being (one) small gift to each person, I meet with--especially if it is official, like date book or calendar, etc (I brought Museum of fine arts calendars--and everyone loved it) .
Let me know if I can make further introductions with Dr. Marie Aimee (she is out of country until 1/26) head of the Non communicable Disease in the Ministry of Health, the Minister of Health, Dr. Agnes Binagwaho, ( I have often waited 4 hours to no avail--although I am not sure she would be the best use of your time, she is a remarkable woman and has put Rwanda on the map for health care improvements) and Principal of the Medical and Nursing School, who has offices in both Butare and Kigali.
If you have additional time to stop by the reading room of Kigali Reads, the Boston based literacy program, they will put you to work reading to the children. We hope to include 10,000 books for them in our container shipment.
Would anyone be willing to carry EKG paper to Musanze? It will weigh about 5 pounds and I can have dropped shipped to you...The driver can drop it at the spot where you stop for a bathroom break and the physician can pick up (hospital is across the street). They have been out for about 6 months, and I think I have located a source for the old machine.
It is a lovely itinerary and fascinating. I really wish I could be there. Please do not hesitate if you have further questions. Chip and I have grown to love Rwanda and will move there for a year or so to get the hospital underway...just juggling that last year of employment here...You will soon see why we love it!
Best Wishes,
Ceeya
