Maro Matosian - Armenia trip
Maro Matosian is an activist and feminist dedicated to the advancement of women in Armenia. In 2010 Matosian founded the Women’s Support Center in Yerevan to assist and empower women and children victims of domestic violence as well as advocate for the defense of women’s rights in Armenia. The center started with the help of AIWA, Tufenkian Foundation and USAID and it offers comprehensive assistance with social workers, psychologists and lawyers as well as 2 shelters.
The center is run based on international standards and methodology for victims of domestic. Maro underwent training in the United State and is one of the founding members of the Coalition to Stop Violence against Women. Matosian has authored a number of publications and guidelines aimed at improving domestic violence service provision in Armenia and has presented at numerous conferences all around the world. She was selected as expert in the field by Council of Europe to prepare a Police Guideline for working with cases of domestic violence as well as a 3- year National Action Plan for Combatting Domestic Violence for the Ministry of Social Affairs. At the request of the Ministry, WSC has trained 12 regional DV support centers and is working on a training manual for social-workers.
